History of Peacekeeping Circles
Talking Circles also called “peacemaking circles,” are an indigenous people’s practice used within community to resolve conflict, teach communication skills, build and restore relationship and resolve community issues. Circle processes are about shared
power, equal voice and respect and no conflict. There is no hierarchy within the peacekeeping circle everyone has equal voice. Participants do not listen to respond, but to understand and resolve conflict.
Peace Keeping Circles provide a sacred space and removes barriers so people can engage in deep and difficult conversation that builds trust, mutual respect, generosity, and reciprocity. The process is about changing one’s self, not changing others, being able to see one another as valuable human beings and treat each other with dignity. The process is guided by the sacred “Talking Stick” to assure equity in the process and the structure is designed by those who use them.
Community-based Peacekeeping Circles are used within the Restorative and Transformative Family and Community Institute (RTFCI) to inter-connect, build trusting relationships, resolve conflict, promote resilience, healing, and mindset change.

Community Voice of Equity are trained Peacekeeping Circle Facilitators representing individuals, community members, advocates, non-profit, faith-based, business, and youth leaders who use their voice to fight for equity and equality for vulnerable and marginalized communities. They also provide oversight for Mary Magdalene Ministries.
About Us
Mary Magdalene Ministries is a seventeen years old social justice and equity advocacy organization. It is located in Raleigh, NC and operates from the lens of Transformative and Restorative Justice practices. For more than fifty years truckloads of data have proven that people of color are disproportionately affected when it comes to incarceration, education, suspension, expulsion academic failure, housing, and many other areas. The source of these disparities are mostly systematic. As a direct result of racial discrimination, arbitrary use of policies and procedures within the culture of agencies and organizations across America.
Our symbol for Transformative and Restorative work is the Sankofa Bird, meaning look to the past for the answers for the future.
