Equity and Social Justice
What is Capacity Building?
Capacity building is the inability of an organization, entity or individual to effectively serve and produce. Internalized Racial Oppression (IRO) is hidden forms of oppression within the race or ethnicity. IRO derives from racism and maintains the system of oppression. It is an intergenerational socialization process that teaches people of color to accept, believe, and live out the propaganda projected by the larger society. It shows up in the form of exclusion, discrimination, and violence.
In White America IRO is called Internalized Racial Superiority. Racism and discrimination are embedded in the culture of organizations, agencies and communities and lead to the creation of inequity, hate and violence. This affects the organization’s capacity building; its presence keeps the entity from providing effective services.
Hypocrisy in the Culture of Organizations (HICO) happens when individuals character and attitudes does not align with the organizations stated mission, values and vision. This not only causes harm in service provision, but also negatively effects the outside perception or simply put, “gives the organization, entity or individual a bad look and bad name for business.”
IRO and HICO Training Objectives
These trainings will help: city, county and state agency leaders, non-profit organization leaders, volunteers, employees, board members, small business and corporate members, community members, and individuals define and understand Internalized Racial Oppression and Hypocrisy in the Culture of Organizations. The training will expose how it shows up and causes harm.
The workshop will also help participants to understand how the two phenomena are hidden symptoms of racism and live in the culture of organizations, families and communities for years, when left unaddressed.
The overall goal of the training is to disrupt the bias thinking and behavior patterns that happen daily while maintaining the system of race oppression. We provide participants with the tools to create positive organizational cultural and bias mindset changes.
